On 13 May 2020, the Port of Beira received a Panamax container vessel for the first time.
The MSC Gina was guided through the port access channel using the modern vessel traffic control and management systems (VTMS) of Port Authority CFM. Berthing was assisted by two new high-power tugs that arrived at the port a few months ago, which have now been successfully been put to the test.
The MSC Gina, built in 1999 and operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has a length of 259.50 metres, a beam of 32.2 metres, and can load up to 4,056 TEUs.
The larger vessel call underscores the confidence of MSC in the growing commercial traffic on the Beira Corridor. MSC Gina is the first of many ships of this capacity that will be introduced on MSC’s services calling at the Port of Beira. Through greater economies of scale, the Beira Corridor will have the capability become even more competitive.
