On 29 April 2020, the Port of Maputo’s container terminal, sub-concessioned to DP World Maputo, welcomed the largest vessel ever to the port, the Santa Catarina.
Operated by Maersk Shipping Line, the Santa Catarina, besides being the largest in length (at 299.9 metres) and beam (42.92 metres) ever to call at the Port of Maputo, also set a new record for the highest TEU per single vessel interchange of 3,310 TEUs.
The performance further underlines DP World Maputo’s offering as a world-class gateway for the Southern Africa market. Through the terminal’s Fixed Berthing Window programme and available berth capacity, zero vessel waiting time is consistently achieved. This in turn translates to maximum schedule reliability for importers and exporters.
Since completing the first phase of totally redeveloping the container terminal, which now offers superior solutions for transit cargoes from the hinterland, in 2018, throughput at the facility has been growing exponentially.
The 2019 volumes grew by 53% over 2018, with more and more hinterland exporters/importers reaping the benefits of the exceptional supply chain solutions available via the Maputo Corridor.
