The rail line linking the Port of Beira to Zimbabwe, which passes through Manica province, is benefitting from a programme of rehabilitation running through to August 2021. The two-year programme is aimed at providing the line with additional capacity for cargo moving to and from the Port of Beira in safe conditions.
Currently cargo volumes are often transported on this route by road – the trains take longer because they cannot exceed a speed of 30 km/h due to track conditions.
Annually, CFM transports about 300,000 tons of cargo on the route. Following rehabilitation, the Machipanda Line will be able to handle up to 300 million tons per year – a great gain for CFM and its customers, mainly from the Republic of Zimbabwe.
