Cargo volumes handled by the Port of Maputo reached 19.5 million tons in 2018, surpassing the record previously set in 2014 (19.3 million tons). This record also represents a growth of 7.14% compared with 2017 during which 18.2 million tons of cargo was handled.
These improved cargo volumes since 2017 are a result of the positive influence of the capital dredging to the access channel of Maputo Port, completed in January 2017.
Following the trend in 2017, rail cargo handling increased again in 2018 as a result of the joint strategy between the port, CFM and Transnet (TFR). In 2017, rail volumes of the main cargoes handled by the Port of Maputo – ferro-chrome and chromium – grew by almost 100%; for 2018 the growth registered was more than 50%, with almost 1.5 million of these volumes transported by rail.
In 2019, the port expects to increase its handling capacity with the completion of the rehabilitation works of berths 6, 7, 8 and 9. The rehabilitation will not only create berths with a draft of up to -15 metres, but it will improve the occupancy rate of berths by creating a larger mooring area. The completion of the works is scheduled for the last quarter of 2019.
